Often, sayings like “Actions speak louder than words,” “Talk is cheap; results are priceless,“ and “You can’t change the world by talking about it – go out there and make it happen,” emphasize the importance of taking action to make a lasting impact. These expressions serve as powerful calls to action, urging individuals to go beyond mere words and take concrete steps toward creating real change in their lives and communities.
October, 2024, Eminence Global PR Firm embodied this principle by launching the “Think Pink, Go Act“ CSR campaign. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Eminence partnered with prominent organizations such as The Hub Karen Mall, Fursa Kenya, KEPSA, NCA, and Aga Khan to make a meaningful impact on breast cancer awareness, advocacy, and support.
Why Breast Cancer? Breast cancer looms large in Kenya, where it is the number one cancer killer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one out of every four cancer diagnoses is for breast cancer. This makes breast cancer a leading health crisis, claiming thousands of lives in Kenya each year and hundreds of thousands globally. These chilling statistics reveal the undeniable need for action, making it essential for us to rally together to combat this disease, raise awareness, and provide the support necessary for those affected.
Breast cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence. With early detection, the survival rate skyrockets, giving individuals a fighting chance to overcome this disease. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is caught early in its localized stage, the five-year relative survival rate is over 90%. Unfortunately, lack of awareness, stigma, and limited access to screening can delay diagnosis, reducing these odds significantly.
This is why the Think Pink, Go Act campaign emphasizes awareness and advocacy for regular screenings. By encouraging early detection, we’re empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to act before it’s too late. This isn’t just about statistics; it’s about saving lives, mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. Early detection is a powerful weapon in the fight against breast cancer, and with the support of our communities, we can make it accessible to everyone.
The “Think Pink, Go Act” mission is powerful: to create a movement that educates, supports, and inspires communities to stand up against breast cancer. To bring this mission to life, the campaign featured an array of events, each with a unique goal, fueling a ripple effect of action and support.
The campaign kicked off with a stunning unveiling on October 11, 2024, at The Hub Karen Mall. This high-energy event set the tone for the movement, marking the official launch of “Think Pink, Go Act.” The event featured passion and testimonials from breast cancer patients who bravely shared their stories. Their words highlighted the financial struggles and emotional tolls of battling this illness, shining a light on the urgent need for financial and community support.
Next came the Pink Run, which began and ended at The Hub Karen Mall. Hundreds gathered to take to the streets, transforming the city with a vibrant display of pink, all in support of breast cancer awareness. The run amplified our message: “Think Pink, Go Act!” as participants spread awareness and advocated for early screenings, better treatment options, and accessible resources.
The grand finale of October was the Pink Banquet on October 31 at Villa Rosa Kempinski. Attended by high-profile guests, the banquet raised crucial funds and created an influential platform to advocate for improved breast cancer policies and treatments. The journey doesn’t stop there, on November 9, the campaign continues with a visit to cancer foundations, where funds will be provided directly to patients in need, reinforcing our commitment to supporting those affected by breast cancer.
Breast cancer is not an isolated battle; it’s a collective one. This disease does not discriminate by age, gender, or background-it can impact anyone. According to WHO, breast cancer claims over 685,000 lives annually worldwide. But these aren’t just numbers; these are families torn apart, friendships shattered, and workplaces diminished by the loss of cherished colleagues. These are 685,000 reasons to act.
If we do something today, breast cancer could one day have no future. If we take action now, patients could receive the support they need to receive timely, effective treatment. Dear reader, if you do something—if you take that first step—you could bring us closer to a future without breast cancer. You have the power to make a difference, to be the change you wish to see in the world.
So, dear reader, don’t just Think Pink; Go Act. Let your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more.
